Rottweilers are very strong dogs used as fighters in the Middle Times. Later the bloody games of bull bating were prohibited and the dogs were used as pets and guards. The breed was on the verge of extinction and only thanks to the efforts of the breed fanciers, the breed we know today has survived. Among the main characteristics of the body and dog's appearance are as follows.
Body: The whole body of the dog should be muscular and well balanced. The chest is roomy, broad and deep with well-sprung ribs. The back is straight and strong; the ratio of shoulder height to length of body should be 9 to10. The loins are short, strong and deep. The croup should be of proportionate length, and broad, very slightly sloping.
Hindquarters: The upper hindquarters are thigh not too short, broad and strongly muscled. The lower are thigh well muscled at top, and strong and sinewy below. The hocks are well angulated without exaggeration with the metatarsals not completely vertical. Besides strength, soundness of hock are highly desirable.
Feet: The feet should be strong, round and compact with toes well arched. The pads are very hard, toenails short, dark and strong. Rear dewclaws should be removed.
Tail: The tail is usually docked; it should be strong and not set too low. It is carried usually horizontally but slightly above horizontal when dog is alert.
Gait/Movement: The dog when moving conveys an impression of supple strength, endurance and purpose. The movements of the Rottweiler should be harmonious, positive and
unrestricted.
Coat: Overall, the hair should be short though it may also be a little longer on the back of the forelegs and breechings. Nevertheless long or excessively wavy coat is highly undesirable.
Color: The usual coloring of the coat of the Rottweiler should be black with clearly defined markings. Acceptable markings are a spot over each eye, on cheeks, as a strip around each side of muzzle, but not on bridge of nose, on throat. Also acceptable are two clear triangles on either side of the breast bone, on forelegs from corpus downward to toes, on inside of rear legs from hock to toes, but not completely eliminating black from back of legs, or under tail. The markings may come in the following colors: from rich tan to mahogany and should not exceed 10 per cent of body color. White markings are undesirable.
