These dogs are not recommended as first-time pets, as owning such a large dogs requires special knowledge and experience with socializing and training dogs. For many centuries, these dogs were used for herding and guarding the cattle and driving it to the market. These dogs were strong and courageous enough to control bulls. They were also known as “butcher dogs.” The ancestors of this breed were the Roman war dogs. Up to nowadays, these dogs retain the personality and working abilities of their ancestors, but the aggression of butcher dogs is almost bred out of these dogs.
