According to the AKC breed standard, these dogs should be strong, calm, and courageous. Aloofness towards strangers and a reserved attitude in new situations are typical of the breed. These features along with a strong protective instinct and a desire to please the owner, make the breed ideal for guarding the house and for personal protection. If poorly bred and not given proper training, these features can make these dogs uncontrollable and potentially dangerous.
